The kent state thing was an outrage because it was the national guard, or some state sponsored guard, that opened fire on protesters.

If you want some sort of comfort assigning a motivation to this guy then I'd say it was an acceptance issue. Et was probably more on the ball with this guy, but chances are he ostracized his peers and didn't make any sort of effort to find friends or a social outlet. Games are a symptom of a person trying to escape, not a cause of actual behavior. If some kid is hiding in his room all day playing CS it means he's facing rejection or a detachment amongst his peers. Saying choices in games or movies or whatever is what causes these things is like saying fevers are what cause people to die from malaria.

Edit: Also looks like he was molested as a kid, that may be another factor, haha... http://www.time.com/time/nation/article ... 69,00.html

you can read them. They're terrible. If I had to peer-review this kid, I don't know what I would say.

So we talked about this at my school yesterday. I also feel that this is a shocking event and shouldn't have taken place. Please note that the following post is strictly my opinion and is not to offend anyone. I am just presenting some other sides of this story. I do feel empathy and sympathy for the victims and their families/friends. With that said, here are my two+ cents:

1. Preventative Measures: According to reports, this student has been known to write "disturbing" pieces of work in the form of plays and other creative writing pieces. A professor is said to have urged him to seek counselling and that this professor would take him to counselling. Why was nothing more done about this? The writings should have been a clear red flag.

2. I don't think it's fair that the media as well as every one and their dog jumped all over the campus authorities and administration for "not telling students immediately". How the hell were they supposed to know that 2 hours later a mass shooting would occur? Notifying 26,000 students immediately is a difficult task. They did what they thought was appropriate at the time and I think that should be respected. We always learn from these types of events as to how to better prepare for emergancies. I do agree with the inquiry and investigation surrounding this event because it will help everyone better understand the step-by-step procedure that was taken and how it could be improved.

3. Political Correctness: In response to an earlier point, I don't think this is an issue of PC. However, I do think that this kind of event (and others like it) are perfect opportunities for politicians to jump back on their "issue campaigns" (i.e. gun violence, media influences, etc.) They're loving this opportunity. Too bad it's at the cost of 30+ lives.

4. Increase in Violence: Our culture has been desensitized to a certain effect. As mentioned by an analyst with CBC News in Canada, as war begins to wind down, or as countries get to a mid-point in war, violence at "home" increases. This is because many people come back from war and the violence is a norm to them.

5. My final point is one that questions the equity in the coverage of events such as this shooting and other school shootings. First, why is it that the media chooses to cover events like this in such details? Imagine if the 2nd shooting spree didn't take place and it was just the first 2 students who died in the dorm. That would still have got huge coverage.

So I would like to know, why do kids who live in bad areas of a city never see coverage of shootings that happen in their neighbourhoods or even their own apartment buildings? Why do we put such a focus on events that happen to the "rich, white kids" (as previously alluded to in another post) and when 30 people of Middle Eastern culture die, kids who represent that culture in schools don't get any discussion or concern? This is just food for thought. Something we discussed in my very equity and social justice based program.

I know this isn't quite the same because it's a different country and all, but 115 people were blown to bits in a food market in Bagdhad yesterday, and it was shown after things like pound/dollar rate, new immigration laws, chancellor surviving no confidence vote, and coverage of the memorial service at VT on the national news, if at all. I don't really understand how society decides the order of importance of news items.

Not trying to open can o'worms about Iraq, but the top story in many countries round the world, not just the US, is of the 33 people who died in Virginia, yet these same countries don't think the hundreds of people killed a week in Iraq warrant the same coverage anymore. What a strange world we live in.

Don't think me heartless or dismissing what happened either, I also think that there is only so much death we can hear about before we end up not caring but I do feel bad for the families and friends of those who were killed. Maybe because it is at a university I could see in my mind how someone could do the same thing here.

WHAT THE F*CK?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18182377/
Quote:
NBC has received packet from VT shooter
Packet included photographs and other material

NBC has received material from the Virginia Tech shooter believed to have been sent between the first and second shooting. Following is a transcript of the announcement on MSNBC.

ALEX WITT, MSNBC anchor: I am joined on the phone, actually I’m getting word, we do have breaking news. We are expecting this news conference at the bottom of the hour. It would turn out this conference from Virginia Tech that NBC News has become to some degree, a part of this investigation.

NBC News has received some information from the deceased shooter in which we received a packet that included some images and a length by diatrab that we believe may shed light on what he was doing between the first shooting and the second. This includes some images, a disturbing, rambling multi page statement. NBC News immediately turned this information over to the authorities to assist in their investigation.

NBC News has been going through this information themselves as well, mindful of the sensitivity of the nature of the information with regard to the families of the deceased. We will not give out any specifics of the information as we’ve seen them thus far. We expect to hear more about this in the briefing, coming up in about four

Honestly, those plays are pure shit.

I have a friend who sent me half of a play and he took Engineering at Duke and works for some flight stuff with the government and his play was ten times better than that garbage...

Seung Cho, you fail. What did you want? Some kind of fame? Did you know you'd never even remotely come close to fame because your writing was so horrible? Loss of sex fuck with you mind? Did you do this because you knew you'd never be with a woman? Or a man for that matter?

Why? What real reason? Were you just a lunitik? Crazy? Enjoy killing? Short time span for you to know... I wish you had lived, I'd want ever family and friend to beat the living fuck out of you. Once a week for the rest of your fuckin' life.

You accomplished two things:

Hurt a ton of people.

Let the world know how stupid you are.

Congrats, dead boy, you're a fuckin retard.

You and everyone else in the states will know his name for a good deal of your life. That was probably enough for him. lol, if anything he was probably looking to be hated so he could feel more vindicated about what he was planning to do. I dunno. This kid was a perfect storm of retardation. There's really only so much teachers can do in this sort of position sunshine, because in the end of things only students or whoever can seek help and if they choose not to then, well, not much can be done. I suppose it's wrong to spark the gun control debate since the only way this couldn't have happened is if civilians weren't allowed to have guns except under extraneous circumstances, otherwise he probably could've found one of a black market. Doesn't matter.

I think the US does need to change its gun laws. Obviously Canada has better gun laws, but that doesnt mean we dont have kids bringing them to school. I agree with Cad, even if the gun laws were better, this guy would have found a way to get a gun.

I just hate seeing people using this as a political platform. It makes me want to throw up seeing Jack Thompson trying to do an "I told you so" and blaming this on video games. Im going to go shoot up a school now and blame it on Jack Thompson.

I don't know what to think. That kid is a fucking retard and his motive for killing all those people is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Watching the video just annoyed me. The scary thing is he looks like a nice kid in some of the pictures lol. Some of the pictures made me laugh...I couldn't help it. wtf was with the hammer? haha.

I wanted to photoshop Mikey's face on that picture of him holding the hammer, with a quote from Team America (where Spottswood hands the hammer and basically tells him to use it for suicide if needed). I didn't do it because I'd go to hell, and somebody would likely take offense.

And yeah...getting guns in the USA is insanely easy haha.

A bunch of brits on somethingawful were talking about how things like this would never happen in Britain and that America is a country of violence so someone simply posted a statistic of all the people killed and injured during soccer games and it shut them up quite well haha
