man.. i thought this was like some southern anthem for every redneck of the world about living it up in the land of the brave, home of the free ala skynyrd's sweet home alabama. but this song is probably one of the most fucked up songs lyrically, i've ever read. feast your eyes:

Rockin' In The Free World wrote:

There's colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign
on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
we'd be better off dead
Don't feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

who knew

You're only realizing now how awesome Neil Young is? Well, better late then never. The music is rich, and the lyrics are deep. I don't think you can get much better then him with an acoustic and harmonica.

edit. Local H is cool, my friend from Chicago introduced me to them. The term 'Highfiving motherfucker' is part of my vocab lol.

Especially Ponuh, since he is a Pearl Jam fanboy and they covered the song with Neil Young.

There are tons of thought provoking lyrics out there that are contraversial politically and socially. Neil Young certainly does not have any kind of monopoly on them.

I'm not sure what the fuck you're going on about. No one made that claim. I can however say with relative certainty that we're not going to find any thought provoking, socially relevant lyrics in the juvenile metal garbage you listen to.

I didnt, and Ive even been to a Neil Diamond concert lol. My ex's Dad had an extra pair of tickets and we went a long for fun lol. The concert was pretty fun (at least Princess and I made the best of it). There was a lady next to us in her late 40s who was dancing so hard I thought she was going to fall over the railing.

It was the only concert ive ever been to where I paid no attention to the music at all lol.

Im not really a Neil Diamond fan, he has some alright stuff, but I just never really had any motivation to get into his music.

I've liked Neil Young for awhile, and I knew he had a lot of socially and politically charged lyrics, but I never really paid much attention to the lyrics of 'Keep On Rockin in the Free World' cuz I always associated it with Nascar and baseball and drunk rednecks in flannel shirts with the sleeves cut off. It wasn't until the other night, my friend Dev and I were talking about how awesome Neil Young is and he told me how fucked up the words were to that particular song were. I found it to be pretty ironic, and since the song is so iconic, I thought maybe others would too.

Rofl of course because its all about dragons, castles, and hating on Christians. I am sure you have read the lyrics of every band I listen to lol. I was poking fun at lyrics in general and how important they seem to people for some reason. Lets cry more about stuff we can't change and write a song about it. We will use the same 3 to 4 chords everyone else uses and put it in 4/4 or maybe 3/4. Keep the song under 5 minutes and have it almost entirely consist of chorus and verse and viola!

Very true, a lot of bands have strong messages. Its basically if you like the music or not. I wouldn't listen to a band that I thought was musically horrible just because they have good lyrics.

EDIT. Btw Yarr, Neil Young is Canidian :P

what's funny is one of the first conversations i had with my now girlfriend was about how i had just bought harvest and loved it. her response was "I haven't heard enough Neil Diamond, is it good?" thankfully she had already proved her musical knowledge well before making that giant faux passe, so I didn't critisize her too harshly for it

You realize that Neil Young himself is Canadian right?

edit: Eternus, lyrics are only important to bands that have a message, and metal bands don't so there's no reason to have lyrics. I used to think like you in that I thought any band that played in even time and didn't use polyrhythm was simplistic, but now I realize that a simplistic sound can be deceivingly complex in many cases. Metal is complex in technique (though much of it sounds like chromatic exercises) but it's certainly not refined.

I thought you must have been quoting a song, because your attempt at putting together a decent sentence sounds like some horrible Death Cab for Cutie impersonation.

I thought it was a clever way of getting his point across.

Was gonna mention Neil Young hates the skynyrd shit (see: Southern Man) and they hate his hating southern men shit (See: Sweet Home Alabama) but it seems to have been made clear.

Rofl at yarr, holy shit.

I usually have a tough time hearing song lyrics, but I've always been 100% clear on rocking in the free world. lol

Yarr went to a Neil Diamond concert with his dad, and has no idea who Neil Young is. Let's all point and laugh at him, as it may be our only chance.

lol I didnt go with my dad. I went with Princess, her Dad and some other people lol. I actually enjoyed myself a lot. I had more fun than I thought I would. I wasnt a fan of the music, but seeing the people who were fans made it pretty entertaining.

It was that or sit around playing FFXI all night. lol I think I made the right choice.

Oh and I'm not someone who tries to be an expert about everything. I love music, but Im not into music like I am with geek culture. I pay no attention to anything outside of my musical taste. I openly admit I totally forgot Neil Diamond =/= Neil Young. I just wasnt thinking when I wrote that post.
