I didn't originally intend for this to happen, but I was farming obsidian and I may have flooded hell a teensy bit

The water is about that depth for well over half the map (medium size).

It took so long for the water to drain down that I had to fight the underground jungle underwater

I've heard there's a bug in the water physics that makes it infinite if you try to drain a huge amount of it all at once. So if you (like a lot of people) try to make obsidian by constantly mining down and joining all the bodies of water you find, you're going to end up with an accidentally flooded hell.

Unfortunately, there's no "cure" once this happens. If you want Hellstone you're going to need to use the air-pocket trick to get into the ground and mine down there.

It used to be possible to drain huge bodies of water in 1.0.1 using sand and the "mine at the bottom to mine sand extremely fast" bug. In fact, you could still do this but it would be so abysmally slow it's not worth it.

It'd be nice if there was some kind of diving helmet accessory that let you breathe under water for longer. I think the only two water releated accessories are the Flipper and the Breathing Reed.

Yeah, I was already done farming hellstone at that point, so it didn't really bother me.

No clue if anyone still cares about hellstone, but imps won't spawn in 3-height corridors. I dug down until they no longer threw fireballs at me, and then I just expanded out in 3-high corridors, leaving a solid piece of ground between each one, except wood planks for moving up/down.

Worked brilliantly. Also, that strip-mine approach makes it a lot harder for those giant bone serpents to reach you, since their mobility is dependant on having blocks to burrow through.

As an aside: Is there any interest in a dedicated server for this game?

As somewhat of an experiment, I've recently built a completely fanless mini-ITX server using a dual-core Intel Atom. With no fans and an SSD harddrive, it's completely silent and uses about 20-30W of power, so I'm probably going to use it as some kind of home server and leave it running 24/7. I'm actually quite impressed with it, it even does the Aero 3D alt-tab smoothly. And the whole thing only cost me like $150-$200.

If it's capable of handling the load, I might try running a server on it. I have 5MB of upload bandwidth and I'm completely uncapped as far as internet goes so I could easily host something at no cost to myself. There's supposed to be official dedicated server software in the next day or two.

If it doesn't work, can't handle it, or nobody's bothered I'll just find something else to do with it, no biggie.

On one hand, I think a dedicated server for us to all play on would be neat. On the other hand, there just doesn't seem to be enough staying power on a single map to warrant it. Can only explore any of the places once, and there's just not enough space to allow for tons of expansive building.

Maybe we'll see what gets added in the next month or so. Especially since they're talking about worlds that automatically regenerate for multiplayer, and alternate worlds (maybe access through a portal?) and stuff.

It's amusing that this little 3-man indie game has potentially more upcoming stuff than FFXIV has had over the past 8 months.

Btw, if anybody is interested or curious about my little cheap server box, specs and pricing:

Spoiler: show
D525MW Motherboard (~$80)
- Intel Atom D525 @1.8GHz (Dual Core) (Built-In: $0)
- 2GB DDR3 SODIMM RAM (~$20)

Mini-Box M350 Enclosure (~$40)
- PicoPSU-90 (~$30)
- 60W Adapter (~$25)

Total Base Cost: $195 (No Harddrive/OS)

Also requires an SSD Harddrive if you want it to be completely silent, but you could shove any old 2.5" (laptop sized) HDD in there. An SSD can be anywhere between $50 and $100 depending on how large/fast you want it to be. I bought a 64GB one ($100ish) so I had room to expand later. You'd also need to put an OS on the thing, which is a bit more cost if you intend to "buy" one, I shoved Windows 7 Pro on this.

Windows Experience Index Scores:

Processor: 3.5
Memory: 4.8
Graphics: 3.1
Gaming Graphics: 3.1
Hard Disk: 6.9

So far I'm impressed, I'm gonna try running some stuff on it once it's finished updating and stuff.

I believe the absolute minimum requirement is that your computer can run XNA4, which requires a graphics card capable of Shader Model 2.0. Which should be anything above a GeForce 6-series.

The Steam page reckons the minimum requirements are:

Quote:
OS: Windows Xp, Vista, 7
Processor: 1.6 Ghz
Memory: 512MB
Hard Disk Space: 200MB
Video Card: 128mb Video Memory, capable of Shader Model 1.1
DirectX®: 9.0c or Greater

I'm pretty sure it actually requires Shader Model 2.0 though. Either way, 2.0 is extremely old and most computers should run it.

The Dedicated Server runs better than I'd expected. I was somewhat worried that an Intel Atom might be a little underpowered. Admittedly it only had me connected to it, but it was only using barely 6-7% CPU. If it wasn't for the fact each server would need 500MB+ RAM to hold each world in memory, we could consider hosting multiple worlds.

Ability to resize the window finally is great, but it feels weird after putting so much time into that tiny little window before.

The new jungle armor looks kinda lame, lol. I guess it makes sense considering where it comes from though. Supposedly the Cobalt Armor will be re-added and obtained in a different way.

I'm calling this the official dedicated server test run.

IP: 94.173.147.110
Port: 7777 (Default)
Password: (Three letter linkshell initials)

I generated a Large World, and I'm gonna leave it on 24/7 and make sure the little server computer thing doesnt fall over, overheat, or explode. I'm re-building my big library at the spawn point just to show off, lol, but otherwise have at it.

The stupid thing decided to reboot to install Windows Updates overnight.

I've restarted it now. I should probably set up the machine to automatically start up the server on boot.

Incidentally, the server always saves the world automatically at the dawn of each in-game day (like 15 or so minutes). So nothing much should have been lost if anyone was playing on it whenever it went off.

Sorry I haven't really been playing this game all week, been busy with E3 news and watching press conferences and stuff.

There's supposed to be a 1.0.4 Terraria content patch tomorrow with new biomes and features and new mobs and stuff. I'll have to take the server down at some point to update it. Not sure when it'll be.

PS: More people should totally play this game. I'm surprised there's not more curiosity about a game with a 3+ page thread.
