Is it bad... that you know your life would be so much better without FFXI, yet you continue to play? Imagine all the time you spend playing/thinking/researching about FFXI and use that time toward something more productive in your life; for example, working out, traveling, getting another job, doing homework, having sex, and etc... Why do you guys/gals continue to play FFXI? A game that has no ending and actually has negative impact irl.

P.S. This question does not apply only to FFXI, but to all the obsessions you have had throughout your life.

It only has a negative impact if you allow it to. It's like drinking, if you lack responsibility to the point that it affects your everyday life in a malicious manner then you have a problem. But making a ridiculious blanket statement like "FFXI ruins your life" misses the mark completely. Besides...

you said it right there, obsession. Obsessing is unhealthy period. Whether its playing a game, climbing, working out, or advancing your career obsession is going to cause a negative impact somewhere.

if there is something you really enjoy, but part of you wants to quit it, but still part of you doesn't, it doesn't make it an obsession necessarily.

If you feel the game has a negative impact on you, stop playing it. It might not be easy to quit especially if you have met some really awesome people in game and you normally hang out with daily. However, RL should always be more important than a game.

I quitted when the game lost its charm. I really miss my friends from time to time especially when there's nothing to do at night. But I really don't have any desire to log back in and know I'll be just as bored as I am. I've even logged back to EQ, I thought I'd play it again until WoW or EQ2 comes out. However, I don't have desire to play that again either.

What I've learned from playing online game is the game is only fun when you have a group of friends with common goal and the game doesn't suck.

when people leave ffxi, hopping around to past games looking for that special gaming magic is common

im in RL enough that i basically can't play FFXI during the week...

my parents think it will help me loosen my addiction for the game, but all it does is make me want to play that much more on the weekend...
