There are always ways out Matti. I never bought one piece of software that wasnt a game.
Dont worry about that, everything is possible in a world of 1's and 0's.

Seriously, just go mac, then you'll atleast get your moneys worth.. even if you dont necessarily pay (even if you kinda have to with Apple, atleast you avoid all the bugs and crap microsoft lands you with) :P

I've dealt with Microsoft since 3.1 and really I just give up :? I've used Macintosh before 3.1 also.... I dont believe Longhorn to be the "Holy Grail" of windows' Operating Systems..

After 4 years of A+, Net+, cisco and MSCE, i would never, ever go apple.
I'm not saying either is bad or good, but no thanks.
I know people that had been working on apples for 3 to 8 years, and they say it was a releaf going to pc.

Out of 100 useful software, 5 are as good on apple. But everything has its consequence, you deal with virus + adware, but if you got norton + any adware removal program, you should be fine.

Those who are computer illiterate should, really stay with apple.

I so totally disagree with you right now it makes me want to puke.
You make the security of OSX into a minor detail. It IS one of the biggest reasons why microsoft is trash (They turned out IE, after all...) and the more they COPY Apple the better. I'm just glad I can use Firefox now on my PC (they admit they copied Safari, it's pretty apparent as well).

Apple is the source for almost all innovation in many, many fields of technology, plain and simple.

I think the reason MS is so prone to virus and spyware is because it is more widespread. I like apple but I think MS has good features too. ( you dont need to buy starbucks coffee to run it  )

I never degraded anything. As i stated abuve.

But how many hackers do you think use apple as a main computer?
Maybe 20% of the population?

Take all the teenagers, and see how many of them use PC. Now from my experience the teenagers from 13 to maybe higher 30's are the biggest cause of malicious software, i know i was.

Do you think they'd want to have a apple pc for the virtual fun?
2 out of 10 people i worked with tolerated Apple's (me being one of them)

Yeah, i like macs, and i'm sure other people do too, but if you look at the advantages and disadvantages that really matter, PC will most likely be the best choice.

Try apgrading your apple, fun huh?

That's part of the reason. Hackers would find a way into OSX if it controlled 90% of the market, heh.

and in regards to upgrading. I admit the apple is like a mercedes benz, where you don't want to open it and fuck it up, just order parts from the manufacturer. A PC is like an old shitty sedan that constantly needs fixing up and new parts.

I dont agree with how you compared both. Its more like this:

Apple is a BMW, looks good, has its luxuries, but runs like any import, just way more expensive and harder to maintain.

A PC is like a honda, runs pretty good, takes you from point a to point b, cheap, reliable, and there is always a cheap way to fix it.

I told you i dont mind apple's and i really enjoy OSX, but reality is that PC's are just overall more likely to be helpful on a daily basis.
I'm not saying PC (MS) is the best thing, because after i took Cisco courses, linux is a dream come true, all i'm trying to point out is how MS keeps surprising me with their effort in making things best.

amen, being a computer science major, everything is done over unix... and none of the profs know how to do things in windows...

(You Aggie..)

From what I see and read on the post this is going to a good OS. I don't really know much about OS becuase I'm not a tech expert nor do I claim to be. All I know is that by comparison I don't like MACs to Windows. I've grown up on using windows and since my Department at school uses MACs it takes a bit to get used to. I won't get into the agrument who is better becuase IMO I don't care. All I know is when this OS does come out the school will offer it pretty cheap to me becuase I'm a student mwuahahahahahaha. I just hope that it'll be better than Microsoft ME...(my god that was crap)

Is Longhorn striking anyone else as just a really well-skinned WinXP?

Any sort of file system changes? Whats new about Longhorn?

Yes, there are lots of new features that LG will have compared to windows XP.

And as much as i would like to explain them to you guys, i cant since i dont have a long time to reply.
But if you really are interested in the new features and such, take some time to watch some movies at the bottom this page and on that same page you could find most information about LG.

I'm not trying to praise or worship the os or anything, but i do like new things, and outmostly i want to know and discuss all of your points and views.

Oh, and here is a quickie:

From that link i posted abuve:

Quote:
Q: So what will be new and different in Windows Longhorn?
A: Here's what we know about Longhorn at this early stage:

Longhorn will feature a task-based (or "iterative") interface that goes far beyond the task-based interface found today in Windows XP. Microsoft has been working to move beyond the dated desktop metaphor still used by most desktop operating systems; I explain some of Microsoft's early work on task-based interfaces in my old Activity Centers preview. This new user interface, or "user experience," is code-named "Aero" and is based on a new .NET-based graphics API called "Avalon," which replaces earlier graphics APIs such as GDI and GDI+, the latter of which debuted in Windows XP.

The Longhorn Start Menu and task bar will be enhanced with a new Sidebar component that can optionally appear locked to one side of the desktop. The Sidebar is an XML-based panel that includes links to local and remote resources.

Longhorn will require 3D video hardware to render special effects that will make the screen more photorealistic and deep. This doesn't mean that the basic windows and mouse interface is being replaced, just that it will look a lot better. For more information, check out my exhaustive Road to Longhorn, Part Two showcase and my PDC 2003 coverage.

Longhorn will optionally include the Palladium security technology Microsoft is developing with Intel and AMD (see the next question for details).

Longhorn will include new anti-virus (AV) APIs that will help developers more easily integrate their wares into the base OS. Microsoft will also offer Longhorn customers a subscription-based AV feature that use AutoUpdate to keep your system up-to-date with new virus signatures.

Longhorn will include integrated recordable DVD capabilities and will work with every type of recordable DVD format. Digital media enthusiasts will be able to copy video from a digital camcorder directly to recordable DVD, bypassing the system's hard drive entirely, if desired.

Longhorn will include an advanced version of the successful Error Reporting Tool (ERT) that shipped in Windows XP; the goal is that only a small number of customers should have to report a bug to Microsoft before the company fixes it and ships the fix electronically and automatically to users.

Longhorn will include a new Setup routine that installs the OS in about 15 minutes.

Longhorn will feature hundreds of new APIs that will let provide access to the new system's features. The Win32 API from previous Windows versions is being replaced by a new .NET-based API called WinFX, for example. It will also feature a new communications and collaboration subsystem, dubbed Indigo.

For more information about the technology in Longhorn, please refer to my exclusive Longhorn Alpha Preview, Longhorn Alpha Preview 2: Build 4008 and Longhorn Alpha Preview 3: Build 4015 articles.

One thing that has changed is that the initial release of Longhorn will no longer include the Windows Future Storage (WinFS) relational database-based storage engine as originally planned. Instead, Microsoft will deliver WinFS as a free out-of-band upgrade for Longhorn users a year after Longhorn ships.

lol zippy, did you try running a virus check and adware check in safe mode?

Eitherway, i'm sorry your PC is screwed, might be a good idea to try keeping a anti virus software up to date.

May I let you keep in mind--Longhorn is 2006, 2007 possbily for release last I heard (feb i think).

Apple will be WELL into OS11 by then, with new innovation.

I have an idea, Apple should be so cool and make an OS on an old expired windows patent and make it really secure. Haha.

Sorry to come back...

Wanted to share with whoever around here,

Here's a couple screenshots of what it seems to be a nice OS.

When you put the CD in:

When you click the install option:

Asking for the CD key:

EULA:

On to the installation:

I'll most likely do the installation this weekend when i get some time,
and hope it runs ok. The installation time said 15-30 minutes,
so hopefully it will be quick and easy. The set-up wizzard looks
very clean and informative. *crosses finger*
