--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Useful Japanese Phrases
Aa Soodesuka - Oh, I see.

Aishiteru - I love you.

Arigatoo - Thank you.

Domo (DOH moh) - Thank you.

Domo arigato (ah ri GAH toh) - Thank you very much.

Doo itashimashite - You are welcome.

Dozo (DOH zoh) - Please.

Gochiso-sama [deshita] - Corresponding to itadakimasu, this phrase traditionally closes a meal.

Gochisoosama - Thank you, it was very tasty.

Gohandesuyo - Dinner is ready.

Hai - Yes. Pronounced 'High' and spoken abruptly with a glottal stop at the end, almost swallowing the last vowel.

Itadakimasu - From a very young age, growing up in a Japanese-American household, we were taught to pause before meals, 'gassho' (put your hands together in prayer) and say 'Itadakimasu' (pronounced EAT-tah-dah-key-mas, with the u on the end half-suppressed and trailing off) in the same fashion that grace would be said before a meal. I don't know if it's of Japanese Buddhist or simply Japanese origin. My understanding is that it translates literally to 'I am ready to eat'. At (buddhist) temple it was explained that it's to insert a pause and moment to reflect upon all of the things that went into the meal you're about to consume(the person(s) preparing the meal, the farmers growing the food, the animals who gave their lives, etc.) and thank them. Since the sect of buddhism I was raised with (jodo shinshu) was pretty adaptive in their practices, it may have been them putting their spin on a general Japanese custom.

Itadakimasu - Let's eat

Itamae - The sushi (or other Japanese) chef. 'Itamae-san' is a polite way to address a sushi chef. May be shortened to 'ita-san'.

Jaa, mata ato de - See you later.

Konbanwa - Good evening.

Konichiwa (koh NEECH ee wah) - Hello; Good afternoon.

Ogenki desu ka? - How are you?

Ohayou gozaimasu - Good morning.

Okonomi - The practice of ordering sushi (usually, of necessity, from the bar) a few pieces at a time.

Omakase - Chef's choice: asking the sushi chef to choose what you'll have next. It is acceptable (i.e., it would not be rude or awkward) to let the sushi chef know your budget in such a situation.

Oyasumi nasai - Good night.

Sayoonara - Good-bye.

General Language Excuse me. Sumimasen

Going back to the ranting about jobs....

I hate my job (hey, I'm here now, shhhh!!!) errr...
The customers are soooooo stupid!

I do insurance (uhhh.. on cell phones, don't laugh!!) and these people... Ugh!

- Some people call up (friends, family, etc.) claiming to be the customer.... Sorry, can't talk to you, go away.

- Some people have their phones stolen and don't want to get a police report.... (Just a phone, right? Why do you need a report? .. well, it *IS* Stolen property!)

- Some people are just plain stupid and don't understand why we have to know what happened to the phone.... Ok, basically put, are we getting the damaged phone back or not? Geez people!

- Some people get thrown into the pool with their phone in their pocket.... Yes, you heard right, their friends throw them in the pool, phone and all! Duhhh....

- Some people get water damage to their phone and try to dry it out... by using a MICROWAVE!! If this isn't bad enough, their phone is now on fire. Water damage + Fire damage = Stupidity!!

- Some people don't want to sign a letter and mail it to us to cancel their insurance.... Our policy states quite plainly that we HAVE to have a mailed, written letter WITH SIGNATURE to remove insurance. Can we say law?

- Some people are just the nicest people you've ever dealt with. They have their police report (if required), can tell you EXACTLY what happened to their phone, and WHEN (almost to the hour, usually). Yes, sir. No, sir. Thank you so much. Have a nice day! Why can't everyone be like these people?!

OHHH .. my personal favorite---the people that DONT HAVE INSURANCE on their phone, but they're willing to cuss you for 15 minutes to prove they did. Where does that get us? Nowhere, cause I still ain't gonna do anything for you. Idiot! /em hangs up the phone. Geez.... I don't have to take that! Woohoo!

That's my rant! Stupid customers!!!! /cry

We do insurance for a company called Cricket. Don't know if they're available in your area, they're not a really big company in terms of service area. This company used to do insurance for Cell One as well, but they stopped before I started working here.

And yeah, all insurance is done by potentially different companies. Directly, I work for a company named ClientLogic. They do outsourcing for call centers, etc. for other companies to contract us to work for them. The company that this particular group is contracted to is Willis Insurance. I'm not sure if they do insurance for anything besides these phones or not, but I don't care, not my business. :D And Willis does the insurance for Cricket. Nice huh?
All I know about other companies: I have a Sprint cell phone personally, and the insurance company Sprint uses is called Lock/Line (weird...) but I don't know if they contract their reps or not.

I used to work for Sprint doing customer service, instead of insurance. About 9 months ago, I left there cause .. quite frankly, the managers were assholes. So I told 'em to shove their job wherever they liked it and walked out. /fume

Ok...here's some more, let's get on to Sprint now.... (for short reading, just read the italics)

Lessee, my main complaint, and the reason I left--

When I started at Sprint, doing **Customer Service** (ok, customer service, NOT SALES) they said "We would like it if you could get these customers to take these features, but you will never be required to meet any sort of quota." Sweet, I can do this. Fix the people's account, create accounts, credit their bill, but no required sales. I'm good to go.

Week 1 outside training: "Hey guys, new policy, we need you guys to Offer to at least 50% of your customers, and you have to sell to 10% of the customers." WHAT ?!?! "But it's not required at this point, you won't be fired if you don't make that goal, but you still need to do it." Ehh.. whatever... /em clicks the "Offered" button, forgets to make the offer, and goes on to the next call. Repeat. Offer rate? ~70% lol!

A few months later: "Hey guys, we decided to increase the goals. 75% offer, 20% sales." Uhhh... no. "And by the way, if you don't meet goal, we'll put you on corrective action." Shit.... but my supervisor was an awesome guy, didn't really care about sales. :D

A few months (and a little corrective action, I'm still pissed about that!) later, we change supervisors. Required change /fume! My new supervisor is a complete ass! Within a month, he says my favorite quote of all from him.... If you don't meet these goals, you WILL be fired. So if you don't like it, go find another job. -- He gave me the evening off to "think it over." .. I came in 3 hours late the next morning, gave him my headset, and told him to kiss his goals. :D

Come on now... Never gonna require it changes to Find a new job or be fired? how stupid... UGH!

They also decided to "fix" our system a little. Kinda pissed me off. Our credit adjustment limit was $200 per adjustment (supposed to be per account). If someone had $600 adjustment that needed done, the supervisor said "Yeah, dude, just do it yourself..." so .. Adjustment: $200 .. Adjustment: $200 .. Adjustment: $200. No big deal, we screwed up, let's fix it quick!
Then they changed the system so we couldn't do that. Then we had to get the supervisor to do the adjustment himself, which usually took filling out paperwork and telling the customer it'd be done in 24hrs. What the hell? Why not just do it!!!

And now for the best part of my time at Sprint! And this relates to my first rant: Insurance!
One day I was sitting around, and the person next to me says "Hey .. here, listen to this...." Hands me her headset and dials a number into her phone. I say, "Ok, that's the insurance number, so what?" "Just listen for a minute...." and a voice comes on the line, it's an automated voice system. Except instead of insurance, it's a SEX LINE!!! OMG ! "What the hell?! What happened to the insurance line!!!!"
Their reply: "Ohh.. it's not really the right number, I accidentally switched 2 digits in the number and it did that. I almost transferred my customer to that line, until I listened to the message...."

I would have DIED if they had ACTUALLY sent the call through to a sex line. "Yes, I'd like to replace my ..." "Oh no, we'll get you *working* in no time... But there will be a $1 a minute charge...." hahaha

LOL yes nice ranting. I dont think Id ever be able to tell them to shove there job and walk out. The one thing Ive found out about the entertainment business here in so cal is there is a whole lot of six degrees of separation going on. You may think you'll never have to deal with them again but, most likely on your next job, the person hiring asks someone about you who , asks someone who, asks someone, who asks the person you walked out on and blam I dont get the job. So I prefer to smile and flip them off as they round the corner. Besides most entertainment jobs dont last more then 6 months then your looking again and who knows that person you don't like may hold the key to your next paycheck. lol

LOL Yeah I know what you mean. Fortunately:
1) I list my first supervisor on my resume, because he was an awesome guy. So hopefully, they'll never even talk to the ass I had as supervisor last. .. But more importantly:
2) I moved since then. Used to live in Bristol, TN (right on TN/VA border) and now live in Knoxville, a good 2 hours away. Haha (2 hours, hmmm... Benediction, drive to Bristol, Benediction.........nah)

Whoah, that was weird.... Anyway...

When I moved, I had to change banks to one that was local to both areas so I could still access checking until I moved. I saw a bank (Bank of America) that was local to both places. Actually, I knew there was a "Bank of America" building, with ATM and all, right near where I lived at the time. I thought, great this will work perfectly! I set up the account online (more convenient due to work schedule at the time). Went down to the building to deposit a paycheck, and there's a tiny sign (Regular printed paper, not big enough to see / read unless you went up to it) stating that the bank closed, but the ATM was still use-able. However, you can't deposit at that ATM. /fume... now what? Go to another bank to get cash, I guess... Until time to move. Fortunately, I later found another branch like 30 minutes away (grrrrrr..) but it's better than a 2 hour drive to Knoxville.... Geez, wtf....

(I can rant about anything..lol)

lol I just about died when I overheard this.... So I'm at work today (Saturdays for working SUCKSSSSSSSSSS SO BAD!!!)

I'm sitting here and overhear someone talking to their customer: And if you don't pay your bill, they'll send it to collections.
The customer apparently replied with "What's collections?" followed by: Collections is where someone comes to your house and you either pay the bill or they take you to jail....

Said so calmly like nothing at all was wrong. We're not in billing even, but geez ... people are stupid! "I'm just not gonna pay my bill, so y'all can go f... yourselves! You won't get a dime outta me!" ... yeah, people actually say that.....

Okay, this is like the third time I've tried to post this....

At my work we send people to a collections agency when they don't return a movie after 20 days. So, this one guy has a couple of games over 20 days, so we send him a notice saying we are sending him to a collections agency. Well, instead of coming in to sort everything out like the 21 year old man that he is, he sent his bitch of a mother in. She was a maniac who told us it was OUR problem HE hadn't returned the games. I fail to see how it is our problem, as we will not be the ones getting hounded by a collections agency.

And, we sell cell phones to because I work at Rogers. And let me tell you, it is a pain in the ass. I know what you're thinking, why would a video store sell phones? But heaven forbid you bring this up to a manager because then you will be accused of undermining the progress of the store and being a bad employee.

I hate my job so much. I hate having to fight with people over late charges. I realize 24 dollars is a lot to pay in late charges, but that's what happens if you bring a movie back a week late. But every customer thinks they are the second coming of Christ and I should bow down to every one of their ridiculous needs and give them whatever they want. I'm sick of having to bend over backwards for a bunch of white trash pricks who are too cheap to pay for a 60 cent late charges.

Oh, and I'm glad that I was promoted and am such an asset to the company, because now I'm guarenteed a whole 10 hours a week.

And also, I'm sick of people coming in and acting so shocked that Shrek is all rented out. Do these people think they are the only brilliant people who decided to rent the first Shrek before they went to the sequal? And then they give me this dumb ass look and say, "you only have three copies of Shrek?" Um, yeah. Its not exactly a huge renter. It was probably rented 10 times in the last year.

I could go on forever.

I feel your pain.. Never worked retail, but the number of people that have their mother, etc. call to cuss us up one side & down the other is absurd. These people are completely ignorant of anything relevant: like the fact that it's THEIR bill and THEIR responsibility to pay for it. They try to pass it off as "Well, but I lost my phone, I shouldn't have to pay for service I can't use..." Uhhh. No, sir, you're an idiot. Unless your account is cancelled, you're gonna pay SOMETHING. And even if you do cancel, if you're under contract, say hello to Mr. Termination Fee. Commonly $150-200 per phone under contract. Seen 'em high? Yep, I've seen an account with 3-4 phones be cancelled and they complain. I'd hate to see a business acount with 75-200 phones. I'd really hate to see what happens if they cancelled it! Oh my!

Ugh... well. On the plus side, it's lunch time so.... BBL :D

What people don't understand, is that when they buy a sell phone from us the only reason it is ridiculously cheap (0$ or 50$) is because they sign up for a two year plan and that subsidizes(sp?) the price of the phone. So when they cancel the phone because they don't want it any more, they have to buy out the remainder of their contract for up to $200. Do they actually believe we are just going to hand them over a 300-500 dollar phone for 25 bucks? The truth is, a lot of people are actually that delusional.

lol The best part of it is...
When they sign up for insurance, they pay $3.95 ($4 for Sprint) or so a month for the premium. Like all insurances there's a deductible (for Sprint, it's $35.00 to best of my knowledge). For us, it went up April 1 to $50.00. They think it's ridiculous to pay that much for a deductible when they're already paying $3.95 a month. When you add it up, it's $3.95 x 12 months = $47.40 a year for insurance, plus $50.00 deductible to replace the phone. It's less than $100 and we replace 2 phones (potentially just under $150) a year.

They think that's a ridiculous amount of money because they got their phone free when they opened their account. But that's because of the rebates, etc. you mentioned for a contract. If they buy it new with no contract, etc. the cheapest phone runs $100-$130.

Now how is it ridiculous to save $30 to replace one phone? How is it ridiculous to save $110 or more if you have to replace two? Add it up, stupid customers! *You*Save*Money* ... Sure, you may never use the insurance, may never need it. But if you do and you don't have it, you'll see why we offered, and why it should have been taken.

The real dumbass idiots are the ones that buy $300 phones and don't get insurance. Hellooooooo... You're paying the same amount someone with a cheap phone saves money with... With a $300 phone, the savings for 1 phone is $200 .. for 2 replacements, you're talking about saving about $450 over the course of a year.

Insurance sucks right? Uhhh .. yeah! :D

New complaint:
- Stupid customers that you ask to verify information:
"What's your Date of Birth?" "It's uhh.. xx/xx/xxxx.." "That's not what we have on your account." "Well, what do you have?"
You really think I'm going to TELL you what the REAL customer's information is? DO I LOOK STUPID TO YOU???? I mean, come on people... I asked YOU for the date, if you don't know it, hang up! moooron!

Lol, yeah people do that will rental and payment accounts too. They don't realize that they can't just prattle off any number and rent off that account - we actually have to verify its you with either i.d or by them correctly identifying their personal information. One guy had no idea, and didn't know what the last movie he rented was, or what his postal code was. So, we couldn't rent to him. Then his crazy wife went came back into the store and started to freak out on us. She kept saying, "NOBODY KNOWS THEIR POSTAL CODE - DO YOU KNOW YOUR POSTAL CODE? DO YOU KNOW YOUR POSTAL CODE?" to random customers in line. Of course, everybody was like, um, of course I know my postal code. Its like, I'm sorry you're idiots and you don't know your own postal code...but that doesn't mean you can treat us like shit.

How stupid do you have to be to not know your zip code?? The last 2 times I've moved, I knew my zip code BEFORE I was fully moved in!

Thinking of which....
I always know an idiot before talking to them when....
"Thanks for calling, can I have your cell phone number, AREA CODE FIRST please?"
Response is one of the following:
- Normal response, area code + phone number
- Idiot # 1 - Phone number, then area code last (duh...)
- Idiot # 2 - Gives area code and home phone number (cell please...)
- Idiot # 3 - Gives phone number, no area code (hello?????)
- Idiot # 4 - My personal favorite: Gives ZIP CODE and phone number!!! How many digits is that? 5-3-4 = 12 .. standard phone number is 3-3-4 = 10 ... Come on, people .. Not your damn zip code!!

Lol, giving the Zip code instead of the Area code...that's classic.

How about this. A guy returns a dvd that his dog chewed up and doesn't feel like he should have to pay the replacement fee. He argued for an hour, and then he finally paid for the replacement and said he should be able to keep the chewed up dvd - it didn't even work. And my manager wanted to keep the dvd as proof because he was going to go to head office and say we were unreasonable. Arrrggghhh....I hate people!! Why are they so stupid and useless and mean???

And this other time, this woman was screaming at me and a co-worker about a late charge and she was like, "who is the manager on duty?" And the guy with me was like, "actually, I am." Then she got really pissed and yelled, "I'm so sick and tired of being held HOSTAGE by PEOPLE LIKE YOU." Excuse me? People like me? Nice university students who work part time at a video store? What exactly is people like me? Like I'm beneath her? Oh, it makes me so angry just to think about it.

One thing that really irritates the hell out of me is the infamous saying "The customer is always right!" Why does it thoroughly irritate me? Because people use it to try to get out of things.

I don't feel I should have to pay that late fee, because I'm the customer and I'm always right. Bullshit.

"You ARE going to file a claim for my phone, and I'm *NOT* going to get a police report. I pay my $3.95 a month, and I'm willing to pay my $50.00 deductible, but I'm *NOT* talking to the police." -- Simple response: "Then I'm not going to file a claim for you. Goodbye. *hangup*"

Ughhhhh.... stupid customers! ~my new phrase~

The thing is, we are reasonable people. We know when we are wrong and we try our hardest to make things right. If a customer complaint is valid, we feel bad and want to do whatever it takes to correct is (unless the person is an asshole, then we don't feel bad and we reluctantly correct it).

But people can't just demand whatever they want and think they deserve it because they are a customer. On Monday this guy called after we were closed and we were five minutes away from leaving and I stupidly picked up the phone. He thought we should wait around for him, reopen the store, and exchange his dvd because it was skipping. I mean, I understand that it sucks that your dvd doesn't work - but we are just about to leave. I wan't born to serve people, this is only a part time job. Needless to say, he thought I was a thoughtless bitch for not waiting around for him. Sorry, but it was 12:20 and I was tired and hungry. I'm a human being and I deserve to take care of myself.

I agree on that part. On the other hand, I had a similar situation (on the other end of things). I had to run to the drug store to pick up some medicine, and it was kinda necessary to get it ASAP, for comfort reasons obviously. Called the pharmacy at say 7:55 and they close at 8 (not sure exact times, but something like that). Told them what I needed and that I lived 3-4 minutes away and asked them to stay open until I could get there. They said Fine. So I drove to the pharmacy (nearly getting myself killed in the process, jumping in front of people & cutting them off) and when I get there, it's like 2 minutes until the time they're supposed to close, but the doors are locked tight and no one's in sight (lights still on though). So I couldn't get the medicine until the following morning.

That really made me mad. Because I asked them to stay a little late, they said OK, and I even got there BEFORE closing time, and yet they were closed. What a load of bullshit....

In that case, I believe the customer (me) was in the right. But if it had been after closing time when I got there, I have no problem with them being closed. But it wasn't even AT closing time, much less AFTER.... what's up with that? At work, we have to stay logged in to the phones and "Available" status until 9:31 M-F (close is "at 9:30") or 7:31 on Saturday (close is "at 7:30"). If there's any calls in queue at that time, we have to clear them out, but no more can come on the line. If we don't stay until 9:31 or calls cleared, we DO get penalized for it.

I think that's wrong that some companies wont even stay open UNTIL "closing time" .. or at least tell people "We close our doors XX minutes before closing time, so don't waste your gas or effort trying to get here".... UGH! /rant mode on! :D

This one guy at my work closed 10 minutes early one day! I was so shocked when I found out. I came buy to return a movie and rent something, and he had already closed up. When I talked to him about it I was like, "you are so lucky it was me and not our Area Manager that came buy." I totally agree that it was wrong of them to do that to you.

Difference is, here at work they monitor our exact log in and out times on our phones. If you take a break and take yourself out of Available, they know to the second when you start and end it. So they have an easy, trackable way to monitor performance like that, and proof for reprimanding people. The problem with retail type places is they don't really monitor when the place is locked up, so it's possible for people to close up 10 minutes early.

Stupid store people... (errr... customers? I'm confused... who am I mad at again? hehe)

If you haven't guessed by now: I'm extreeeeeemely bored at work. Saturdays SUCK. :)
