In other news, I started making a giant Library.

Sure you're creatively limited compared to Minecraft but that doesn't mean you can't build stuff.

I love doing dungeon raids, they're frantic as hell. Unfortunately, this picture is really tame because it's the only chance I got to take a picture, lol.

Quick Start Guide

1) Gather wood. You start with an Axe, find some trees and chop them down. Stand next to a tree with the Axe selected and hold your mouse button over the base of the tree until it collapses. Gather several trees but try not to stray too far away from your spawn point. You will need a lot of wood to start with, in the hundreds if possible. But if you run out of wood at any point below just go and gather more trees.

2) Build a shelter. Use the wood you gathered to build a basic shelter. Simply select the wood and start dragging your mouse around near your character to place the wooden blocks. Try and make an enclosed space on a nice flat piece of ground. Make the wall as high as it will go without having to jump.

3) Make a crafting table. Hit escape to open your inventory and crafting menu, on the bottom left, select a Crafting Table (it uses some of your wood) and place it onto your hotbar. Select the crafting table on your hotbar and click on the ground near you to place it.

4) Make a sword. You should hopefully have enough wood left over to make a sword. While standing next to your new crafting table, you'll have more crafting options available on your escape menu, one should be a sword. Click it and drop it on your hotbar. You should have less trouble with the monsters now.

5) Make doors. Use the crafting table and make two doors, and put them on your hotbar. Use your axe to cut a 3-block-high hole in either side of your shelter. With the doors selected on your hotbar, click in the empty spaces left behind and the door should fit. Right click the door to open and close it. Although monsters will pound on your doors, they cannot open them except on Blood Moons.

6) Make torches. Hopefully you've killed a few slimes by now, if not, kill a couple. The slime gel they drop is required to make torches. Once you have some slime gel, use the crafting menu to make a bunch of torches and drop them in your hot bar. Place the torches on the walls of your shelter so that you'll be able to see at nighttime.

7) Finish the shelter. Finally, craft lots of an item called "Wood Wall". This is a background. You can place them as a back wall to your shelter, and this has the important task of preventing monsters from spawning inside your house and also classifies it as indoors so NPCs are allowed to move in.

8) Add Furniture. Use the crafting table to make an ordinary table and a chair. Adding both of these to your shelter will make your new shelter into a "house". This will allow NPCs to move in and occupy it. Your very first house will be automatically taken by the Guide, you should see him wander in after a while. Making more houses (or adding rooms to your current house) will allow more NPCs to move in.

Now you have a shelter to stay inside when you need peace from the constant stream of monsters spawning day and night.

What Next

1) Make a Hammer. If you haven't already, make a Hammer at your crafting table. You'll need one to smash Life Crystals, and it's also used for picking up and destorying objects you can't with your axe/pickaxe (such as the wood walls and furniture).

2) Explore. Go find some caves and see if you can find anything. Don't be too afraid to die, all you'll lose is 50% of your currently carried coins. You won't drop anything else. The deeper you get inside a cave the more likely you are to run into chests (with loot) or heart crystals (increase your maximum HP). Make sure you bring lots of torches with you.

3) Find Ore and Stone. You should try to find some ore, such as Copper, Iron or Gold. You'll need these made into bars and you can start making better tools and weapons. Once you're in a large cave, try digging into dead-ends and see if you hit another cave. Stone is also handy as you can make better houses with it. You'll need a furnace to smelt ore, you can make one for back home using Stone and Torches.

4) Improve Your House. You need to extend your house eventually. Either make additional rooms to your current one or make a new building. Same rules as before: enclosed space with light, a back wall, a door, a table, and a chair. If you have a second house/room and 50 silver coins, a Merchant will move in for you to buy/sell things from.

5) Upgrade. Once you start collecting copper, iron and gold, you can start smelting them into new armor and equipment. You'll need an Anvil to make most metal weapons and armor. You can craft these using Iron Bars or buy one from the merchant for 50 silver. Use your new stuff to make deeper mines to get better ores (like Gold).

That should be enough to get you started and well on your way.

You can take your main inventory with you between worlds, so if you're like me, you create a "large" map for your main house, but then make a few other small "farm" maps for gathering resources. I didn't want to clear-cut my main map, so I used other maps to farm the wood. haha.

You can always plant more trees, of course.

Apparently this game has now sold 200,000 copies.

Steam takes a 30% cut. The game sells for $10. It's made by only 3 guys (to my knowledge) and has only been in development for 5 months.

200,000 x 10 x 0.7 = $1,400,000

That's like $90,000 per month per person. That's a ton for an indie title. Minecraft itself probably didn't take off that fast at first.

People are getting 30+ hours of game out of the $10, with more content to come. Considering a lot of us spent $50-$60 for 7 hours of Portal 2, that's a lot of bang for buck.

I'm still happy to report that I haven't bought Portal 2. I've enjoyed Minecraft/Terraria waaaaaay more than any other console game I've played recently (Though I do feel I got my money's worth from Disgaea 3).

Maybe Indie titles are what I enjoy now. I think there's a lot of smart sense it making a fun game that sells for cheap enough to where it's not a huge financial decision.

I've spent more at Taco Bell than I have on Terraria.

Here's what I did, Yarr.

I farmed gold gear, like you. From there, I basically created "small" maps and farmed the floating islands on them. Ket posted the height needed for those islands and how to find them. I farmed them for gold. You only get 4 "big" drops from the chests, but then usually you get some gold, ninja starts, dynamite (!), and other things.

It didn't take long, but I quickly saved up enough money to buy the mini-shark gun from the arms dealer. It costs 50 gold. With that, and gold armor, you can take out the eye of c'thulu no prob. If you don't have the arms dealer, guns have a good drop rate from the shadow orbs in the corruption, and you can use your reserve of dynamite to blow up the corrupted rocks to reach the shadow orbs. only destroy two orbs per "farm" map until you're ready to take on the eater of worlds boss, tho.

If you don't like the idea of farming floating islands for loot, you can just create farm maps to gather sand. Then Sand > Glass > Bottles and sell the bottles. You can make gold pretty fast that way, too. I liked the floating island method simply 'cause you can get baloons, extra ore, and gold/silver/copper Walls/Bricks already made for you, should you ever want to make fancy, shiny buildings.

Once you kill the Eye, the dryad moves in, and you can purify the corrupted areas to kill the shadow orbs without using up dynamite.

When you get to the point where you can kill shadow orbs, you can slowly start mining meteorites (that sometimes fall shortly after you destroy a shadow orb), and get better armor/tools.

Oh, and craft an obsidian skull from obsidian, so you don't take damage from standing on/touching the meteorite bricks. You combine water with lava to make obsidian. Don't really have a great strategy for doing it, but it's not too hard to mine a flood tunnel, or something.

If you want to follow the game's normal progression, you should be working on summoning bosses after gold tier. Your goal is destroying the Shadow Orbs at the bottom of corrupted chasms so you can get meteors to fall on your world for you to mine.

To get to the shadow orbs you need either:
  • Dynamite. If you have any you can temporarily skip fighting bosses and blast your way straight to an orb as long as the wall isn't too thick.

This is the quickest way, but you might be against skipping a little of the game's progression, or simply have no Dynamite.
  • Purification Powder. Buy this from the Dryad NPC who will only come once you've beaten a boss, will let you turn Ebonstone back to ordinary stone so you can mine through.

This is the way you're meant to do it. It'll require you to beat the Eye of Cthulhu one way or another. I personally did this with 200 shurikens which I just bought from the merchant. I wouldn't particularly recommend it though as it's a bit slow and you have to defeat him before sunrise.
  • Nightmare Pickaxe. You make these from shadow scales that drop from the Eater of Worlds. This pickaxe can mine straight through Ebonstone normally.

This is an alternate route if you don't want to kill Cthulhu. It requires that you instead fight Eater of Worlds, which can be done by farming a few of those Eater of Souls for rotten chunks and crafting a summoning item at a demon alter. Make sure you use the item inside the corruption or it'll instantly kill you.

Once you can break Shadow Orbs, meteors will fall onto your world, which you can mine for the next tier of equipment: Meteorite.

Be warned, breaking 3 Shadow Orbs will automatically summon Eater of Worlds whether you're ready for it or not. You're very likely to be stuck down a chasm when this happens so you need to be very good at grappling hooking your way out of it while being chased by a boss.

By the way, surprised I didn't mention this yet in this thread, but the game does have a wiki for finding a lot of this stuff out: http://wiki.terrariaonline.com/

If you're having trouble with any of the bosses, the answer is usually: More Potions. Bringing a whole stack of 30 potions to any boss fight is not unwise, and you can just buy them from the merchant if you want. You can also make better potions by combining them with glowing mushrooms.

As of right now, the game's progression is roughly:
  • Wood Equipment
  • Copper Equipment
  • Iron Equipment
  • Gold Equipment
  • [Bosses: Cthulhu / Eater of Worlds]
  • [Shadow Orbs]
  • Nightmare / Shadow Equipment
  • Meteorite Equipment
  • [Boss: Skeletron]
  • [Dungeon Raids: Unique Equipment / Muramasa* / Necro Armor]
  • Cobalt Armor / Ivy Upgrades (Underground Jungle*)
  • Hellstone Equipment (Underworld)

* While not the strongest weapon in the game by any means, Muramasa is the only sword in the game that automatically swings (and quite fast) by simply holding the mouse button down. It's highly recommended you find this sword somewhere in the dungeon.

* The Underground Jungle is optional somewhat, but the Grappling Hook upgrade is nice. Cobalt Armor is also great if you like the mana regen from meteorite but want more defense.

Fun game, but I just soloed Skeletron in like 20s with the Phoenix Blaster. Kinda bored now. Hopefully they'll add more stuff to do.

Definitely worth the buy though.

BTW, this is the method I used for farming obsidian. Make a bunch of buckets, fill the buckets with lava, then find a decent sized collection of water:

http://i.imgur.com/taD3X.png

With 3 buckets I ended up with about 70ish obsidian, but that's because I'm too damned lazy to count 31 blocks across.

I believe it's 8 right now. They said they're going to remove tha limit when the proper steam-integrated dedicated server comes along, and then it'll simply be limited by your computer hardware and internet connection.

The dev's have been quite quiet all week, I was hoping they were planning a big patch for the end of the week. Steam don't issue updates over the weekend to my knowledge (I remember Magicka's team wanted to release emergency patches but everyone had to wait til Monday) so it'll probably be a couple more days now.

I finally beat the eye boss. I got really really luckly when I went looking for floating islands and found one on my first shot (didnt event knot it would be there, i just wanted to see how high i could stack) and the chest had a starfury. I didnt think it was so good, but then I got the full meteor armor with the mana regen and reduction. Then I just fought it near the nurse so I could get full hp. Wasnt too hard, but it wasnt a walk in the park.

Main dev finally posted a little of the things he's planning. If he added even half of this stuff it's gonna be hours and hours and hours of more things to do.

Quote:
Progression has been pretty slow over the last week. I've actually been in the middle of moving. I put an offer on a house before the first trailer went public, and got the keys to it the day before Terraria was released. (Great timing, huh?)

I just finally got my workspace set up at the new place, so I should be able to get back to the grind early next week. But enough about that, let's talk about the future of Terraria.

My immediate focus for the game will be patching up the remaining bugs, implementing Steam features, and of course working on multiplayer to make it more secure and accessible. Multiplayer is a bit of a mess right now, and a dedicated server with no graphics card requirements is very much needed. Content progression will be slow for the next few weeks until we get all of the necessities taken care of. Though, we will be adding a few new things here and there to keep you interested.

In the long term, we will not just be adding content, but new mechanics as well. Some of the ideas the we have been playing around with are:
  • Pure PvP servers with team based objectives. Worlds will be generated before every match. Imagine a CTF server where towers are automatically created on either side of the map. Players can fight it out on the surface, or try to tunnel into the other tower.
  • Adding sloped/inclined tiles to make the world smoother.
  • New harder world types to continue game progression (Ex: Alien planets, alternate dimensions, evil worlds, etc.)
  • Enemy factions that will move into your world, and build their own city. You can slaughter them while they are weak, or let them build up their strength to get better rewards.
  • More events: Volcanoes, earthquakes, more/improved invasions, etc..
  • Weather: Seasons, snow, floods, etc..
  • Farming, and stamina system that gives a bonus to player stats.
  • Mechanics for making traps and devices.

Terraria has endless possibilities, and there is still a lot more that we want to do with it. In the meantime, please be patient while we get the last few kinks worked out.
